Scum Villain Chapter 79: Bygone Love

Tianlang-jun’s limbs were broken beyond repair, Zhuzhi-lang was nailed to the stone wall, Wu Chen-dashi supported Wu Wang, whose head was bleeding profusely, Mobei-Jun had Shang Qinghua dangling in his hold, and Yue Qingyuan stood beside Shen Qingqiu.

Only Luo Binghe stood directly facing Xin Mo’s position, head currently lowered, leisurely adjusting his sleeves.

Shen Qingqiu said solemnly, “Luo Binghe, you come here.”

Luo Binghe shook his head once. Only once, but very resolutely.

Shen Qingqiu said, disappointed, “You lied to me again.”

Luo Binghe’s movements paused, and he asked back, “Shizun, I said I would help you against Tianlang-jun. I can kill him for you now, right away; how can you say I lied to you?”

Tianlang-jun smiled and said, “Letting off the enemy to protect oneself; this was quite a good move. Unfortunately, I’m not very useful, so he still needed to take action himself.”

Hearing the words, “letting off the enemy to protect oneself,” Shen Qingqiu’s heart became increasingly uneasy.

Did Luo Binghe purposely give Tianlang-jun Xin Mo. After all, Tianlang-jun’s Dew Flower body would deteriorate faster once Xin Mo was in his possession; even if the sword was given to him, it wouldn’t pose a huge threat to Luo Binghe.

Perhaps he was too disoriented, and allowed his thoughts to show on his face, as Luo Binghe said sorrowfully, “Shizun, what are you thinking now? He did steal Xin Mo; it’s just that Xin Mo only recognizes me as its master. You’ve said before, that you would rather trust and accept the consequences, than not trust and make a mistake. Why do you again not trust me?

Shen Qingqiu slowly said, “I’ve trusted you many times. Up until just now, I still trusted you.”

Luo Binghe said, “Is that so?”

He gave a twisted smile: “But I don’t dare trust Shizun anymore.”

His smile was extremely uncanny. Shen Qingqiu could sense that something was wrong, and softened his expression and tone: “What’s gotten into you this time.”

The moment he softened, Luo Binghe suddenly stopped smiling.

He had an appearance full of sorrow and despair: “Shizun, I’ve said before, as expected, the times you’re with them are when you’re happiest.”

Initially, Shen Qingqiu still had yet to figure out who “them” referred to. Before the stone wall where Xin Mo was, Luo Binghe slowly paced back and forth.

He laughed to himself, saying, “All the times I asked Shizun to leave with me, you’ve never agreed even once. Even when you did agree, it was because I demanded by force, and not because you were willing. But when they ask you to stay, you never hesitate.”

He looked at Shen Qingqiu: “Shizun, you don’t laugh often. I love seeing you laugh. But whenever I recall that you would only laugh like that when you’re with them, I…”

He very quietly said, “...am very, very miserable.”

Shen Qingqiu finally understood. “Them” referred to Cang Qiong Mountains.

That day in the Bamboo House, when Liu Qingge suddenly opened the windows to investigate, really had been because he’d sensed the shred of killing intent Luo Binghe had leaked as he’d lingered outside, and his aura of rage and despair.

He hadn’t left, but had instead heard the laughter within the Bamboo House, that single “Mm” of agreement, and recorded it all inside his heart.

Shen Qingqiu said, “You’re angry because of this?”

“Angry?” Luo Binghe darkly spat two words: “I hate!”

“I hate myself!”

He irritably quickened his pace, hands clasped behind his back.

“I hate how I’m useless. I hate how I can never keep anyone, no one…has ever willingly chosen me.”

No one in the cave dared move rashly. Luo Binghe was currently maintaining Xin Mo’s supply; nobody wanted him to suddenly launch an attack. Yue Qingyuan said, “To do something like this, you’re forcing him to choose between the two?”

Luo Binghe paused his steps, and shook his head: “Choose between the two? No. That’s not it.”

“I know that if he chooses, Shizun definitely won’t pick me. So, it’s fine if there are no choices.”

A slight flush infused Luo Binghe’s stark-white face, filled with a strange excitement: “So this time I’ve learned my lesson. If Cang Qiong Mountains ceases to exist, everything would be fine, right? This way, Shizun only has me.”

Wu Chen-dashi couldn’t bear to listen anymore, chanting sutras with his palms together, going “Amitabha Buddha,” and said, “Luo-shizhu, you’ve been possessed.”

Luo Binghe burst into unrestrained laughter, and Wu Chen-dashi continued, “If there are no choices, then of course you can’t be abandoned. But Shen-fengzhu’s actions and conduct towards you, how will you deal with those?”

Luo Binghe gently said, “Shizun, if Qing Jing Peak is gone, I can build you another. It’s fine if you resent me, it’s fine if you hate me. I won’t make any big demands. If you’re unsatisfied, you can hit me, kill me, after all, I can’t die. As long...as long you don’t leave me.”

He earnestly said, “It’s true, I only have this one wish.”

Watching Luo Binghe’s current disoriented, qi-deviated appearance, a bitter taste filled Shen Qingqiu’s mouth, unable to speak.

His pupils were dilated, the blood-red outside his pupils periodically expanding and shrinking, his smile twisted; it truly looked like he’d gone fully insane, like he’d completely lost his mind. Xin Mo overflowed with purple light; one couldn’t tell if he was controlling this sword, or if this sword was controlling him.

Zhuzhi-lang said, “Other than Cang Qiong Mountains, this world has thousands of things Shen-xianshi values, are you going to destroy all those as well?”

Luo Binghe said, smiling, “Yes? Why not!”

He tilted his head, then turned suddenly, maliciously: “Shut him up!”

Mobei-jun heard these words, thought for a moment, then threw a punch in Zhuzhi-lang’s face.

Tianglang-jun watched Luo Binghe, his gaze flashing with pity, and said, sighing, “...Xin Mo has already invaded your mind. You’ve gone mad.”

Ever since his and Luo Binghe’s first meeting, this was the one and only time he had a father's expression. But Luo Binghe didn’t notice at all, nodding and smiling: “Yes. I’ve gone mad.”

Listening to him admit that he’d gone mad, Shen Qingqiu’s heart spasmed with a dull pain.

He said quietly, “Binghe, get away from that sword first, far away from it.”

While gently persuading, he secretly placed a hand on Xiu Ya’s hilt beneath his sleeve. Luo Binghe said, laughing, “It’s no use. Shizun, you don’t need to do this. The nicer you are to me, the more afraid I am.”

As he talked, his right hand made a slight upwards gesture. In an instant, Xin Mo’s purple qi overflowed. Zhuzhi-lang spat out a mouthful of congested blood. The punch a moment ago had only shut him up for a little while. He calmly said, “Pitiful.”

“Pitiful?” Luo Binghe muttered, “That’s right, I’m pitiful. It’s fine if it’s out of pity too, will Shizun stay by my side just once?”

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

Luo Binghe’s pupils were red as he gritted his teeth: “Shizun, you’ve let go of me, again and again.”

“Always, always, anyone, anything! Can become a reason to abandon me, until sometimes you don’t even need a reason! It’s always like this!”

Suddenly, Shang Qinghua fell to the ground with a thud. Shen Qingqiu also subconsciously held onto the stone wall.

The entire ground began violently shaking. Maigu Mountain’s descent had sped up!

Yue Qingyuan lightly said, “Shidi, he’s gone mad, what can you do?”

Luo Binghe sneered, backing up two steps, and abruptly grabbed Xin Mo’s hilt. The earth tremors became stronger and stronger; looking out through the cavern entrance, one could see innumerable mountain peaks of different heights, jutting through the rolling clouds. Shen Qingqiu was about to pull out Xiu Ya, when suddenly beside him came a blinding white light. Yue Qingyuan had drawn his sword first. The sword’s howl ripped through the pervasive clouds and dark purple qi.

Xuan Su had been unsheathed!

Mobei-jun saw Yue Qingyuan point the sword at Luo Binghe, and stepped up to fight. Xuan Su’s spiritual energy surged, and he was blown away before they even made contact.

Mobei-jun looked like he'd never expected a day would come when someone sent him flying; in a flash, he’d fallen off Maigu Mountain, still wearing that expression. Frightened out of his wits, Shang Qinghua grabbed a sword and rushed after; Shen Qingqiu hurriedly seized him: “What are you doing!”

Shang Qinghua roared, “Shit, he can’t fly!” After saying this he jumped down.

Shen Qingqiu braved the gales and rushing clouds, peering down through the rupture, and just happened to see Shang Qinghua flying on a sword and catching Mobei-jun, still a hundred zhang in the air, above the icy ground. After confirming he wouldn’t fall to his death, Shen Qingqiu didn’t even have time to sigh in relief and quickly turned back; Luo Binghe and Yue Qingyuan were already dueling.

As expected, Luo Binghe’s power was terrifying, but Shen Qingqiu hadn’t expected a fully unsheathed Xuan Su to be so powerful, capable of fighting evenly with a crazed Luo Binghe. Shen Qingqiu could feel the fluctuating spiritual energy and demonic qi pressing on his eardrums and throat, resounding. He could tell that this cavern would soon collapse, and rushed to the stone wall, grabbing Xin Mo barehanded; with a forceful pull, he yanked it out!

Although he’d pulled it out, Maigu Mountain’s descent didn’t slow. Seeing the situation, Luo Binghe came to seize the sword. Yue Qingyuan didn’t give him the chance, using Xuan Su’s point to draw a dazzling trail visible to the naked eye: a huge barrier and complicated curse seals creating an invisible cage, trapping Luo Binghe within.

Yue Qingyuan saw that Shen Qingqiu had already acquired Xin Mo, and said in a deep voice, “Go!”

How could he go in this sort of situation? Shen Qingqiu immediately shook his head, and was about to toss him Xin Mo, when he felt something beneath him give out.

It he who had given out, the ground had. This cavern had finally collapsed!

Maigu Mountain’s second floor.

Shen Qingqiu dug Yue Qingyuan out from a pile of rubble: “Sect Leader? Shixiong? Zhangmen-shixiong!”

Yue Qingyuan’s complexion slowly turned pale, blood trickling from his lips; he swallowed once, seeming to swallow down a mouthful of warm blood.

He opened his eyes, and glanced at Shen Qingqiu: “...Where are the others.”

Maigu Mountain’s internal structure was now like a disordered honeycomb, with one hole after the next. Shen Qingqiu gave his surroundings a glance: “I didn’t see Wu Chen-dashi’s or Tianlang-jun’s lot; they might be in here, or might have followed the piles of rubble down into the other caves. He looked back: “Shixiong, when did you get injured?”

Yue Qingyuan didn’t answer, and asked, “Do you have Xin Mo?”

Shen Qingqiu showed him the sword: “Here. But Maigu Mountain is still falling; the unification probably has yet to finish. Shixiong, take the sword and go down, and destroy it.”

With his support, Yue Qingyuan slowly stood up: “...And you?”

Of course, he’d go back and look for Luo Binghe.

Shen Qingqiu avoided the question: “Shixiong, this injury of yours isn’t normal, exactly what happened?”

Yue Qingyuan gave an irrelevant answer, saying: “Originally, I didn’t want to. But...in the end, I’m an impulsive person.”

Shen Qingqiu thought these lines were strange, but didn’t think deeply about them, and continued walking while supporting him: “Shixiong, can you still walk? You go down first, destroy the sword, and have Mu-shidi heal you. Leave Luo Binghe to me.”

Being supported by him, Yue Qingyuan had managed to stand with some difficulty, all while dripping fresh blood onto the ground. Shen Qingqiu thought he was fine and let go. Who would have known, that right after he had, after standing a short while, Yue Qingyuan collapsed again.

Shen Qingqiu blanched, and hurriedly went to help him up again: “Zhangmen-shixiong? Zhangmen-shixiong?” After examining him briefly, even with his superficial medical knowledge, he could tell that Yue Qingyuan’s current condition was extremely terrible!

Yue Qingyuan had a vacant expression, like he hadn’t heard anything Shen Qingqiu had said, saying lowly, “But...the two times at Jinlan City and Luo Binghe’s siege of the mountains, I remained steady, taking into account the big picture...but afterwards when thinking back, it would have been better...to be impulsive.”

Seeing how drowsy he was, Shen Qingqiu itched to forcefully pinch Yue Qingyuan awake, but didn’t dare overstep, and so could only yell in his ear, not letting him pass out: “Shixiong, wake up! You weren’t wrong!”

Yue Qingyuan closed his eyes, shaking his head. He took in a breath, and had another violent coughing fit that caused Shen Qingqiu to jump in terror.

Blood poured out incessantly with the coughs. He said with difficulty, “Return...Xuan Su to its sheath for me.”

Shen Qingqiu hurriedly dropped down next to him and returned Xuan Su, still emitting a blinding white light, to its sheath, then held it out to him. At this, Yue Qingyuan’s complexion finally improved a little, the most painful of his breaths evened out.

He dazedly stared at the hand Shen Qingqiu used to put away Xuan Su, and didn’t take it, but said instead, “If I perish here, bring...Xuan Su back to Wan Jian Peak for me.”

Shen Qingqiu was surprised: “What did you say?”

Perish? Yue Qingyuan’s injuries were that severe, to the point he was likely to die?!

Yue Qingyuan said, “Xuan Su is incredibly powerful, but I never draw it against enemies; you must have tried guessing a reason.”

Shen Qingqiu nodded. Not only had he guessed, many people had guessed.

Yue Qingyuan said, “Xuan Su is my life. Do you understand what this means?”

He absolutely didn’t. But Shen Qingqiu knew, it definitely didn’t mean a cultivation path based on loving your sword more than your life.

He also knew, that what Yue Qingyuan was about to say next, would definitely be a secret he’d never told anyone before.

As expected, Yue Qingyuan said, “Every time I draw Xuan Su, it consumes my lifeforce.”

As soon as these words came out, Shen Qingqiu felt like the Xuan Su he was holding, suddenly became a thousand jin heavier.

No wonder Xuan Su was never unsheathed.

No wonder he never drew his sword, unless as a last resort.

Shen Qingqiu said, stunned, “Shixiong you...this was a qi deviation?”

Using his lifeforce to transport spiritual energy, tying his life and his sword together. If it weren’t for an accident during cultivation, a qi deviation, why would Yue Qingyuan cultivate this sort of evil path?!

Yue Qingyuan slowly said, “At age fifteen, I entered Qiong Ding Peak, my heart occupied, desperate for success. I strived to become one with the sword, but failed and ended up in this state. Achieved the opposite of my goal, was left with many grievances, and a lifetime of regrets.”

As he spoke, the vestiges of colour his coughing had brought up, suddenly vanished from his face without a trace. Shen Qingqiu hurriedly interrupted, “Don’t talk anymore. This isn’t the time to talk about this. I’ll take you to Mu-shidi first.”

The two of them walked several steps with difficulty, when Yue Qingyuan suddenly said lowly, “...I’m sorry.”

Shen Qingqiu didn’t understand why he was apologizing. Yue Qingyuan had never wronged him any way. If anything, it was he who should be sorry, always slacking off, even creating a mountain of troubles, dragging Yue Qingyuan into the headache of cleaning up after him.

But Yue Qingyuan’s next words shook him to the core. “...I’m truly...sorry.”

“Even though I wanted to return as quickly as possible, even though I wanted to immediately come get you...I made a mess of things instead. You were right, in the end I’m an impulsive person…”

“After that, Shizun destroyed my entire body: the tendons, the bones, the meridians, and shut me inside Lingxi Caves for over an year, broke everything down and rebuilt it anew.”

“I screamed, I yelled, but it was no use. For an entire year, inside that pitch-black cave, no matter how crazed I became, how hysterical I became, no one would listen closely to what I was saying, no one would let me out…”

“I pushed myself as hard as I could, but by the time I returned, Qiu Manor had already been destroyed for a while…”

From deep within his mind, came the sound of something tearing.

In that instant, Yue Qingyuan’s ardent concern in the past, his wordless protectiveness, all sorts of scenes, all sorts of details, lined up in his mind like trotting-horse lamp, clear beyond compare.

No wonder no matter how “Shen Qingqiu” dug his own grave, the Sect Leader never made life difficult for him, being always infinitely forgiving, infinitely patient.

No wonder, the rescuer Shen Jiu waited for never returned.

Yue Qingyuan, Shen Qingqiu; Yue Qi, Shen Jiu.

So that’s how it was! That’s how it was!

Yue Qingyuan said, “I really...didn’t mean to not return. Only, it really is true, that the world is pitiless, leading the two of us to miss each other...”

With each line he spoke, fresh blood welled further. Shen Qingqiu supported him by his arm, pausing twice as long for every step they took, sighing and saying, “...Don’t talk anymore.”

What happened after, he already knew.

Yue Qingyuan resolutely said, “Just let me finish speaking, this one time.”

“As you always say, ‘sorry’ is only an empty word, completely useless. I’ve also never explained, but today I must let you hear, not to ask for your forgiveness or sympathy, but because if I don’t say it now...it will be too late.”

Shen Qingqiu’s heart became acrid, his eyes hot.

Too late. It was already too late!

Shen Jiu was no longer here.

Maybe he’d died, or maybe like Shen Yuan, his soul had been transported into another foreign world.

But no matter which, he couldn’t hear Yue Qingyuan’s words, ever again.

A cascade of positive alert chimes, bursting with joyful atmosphere. Yet Shen Qingqiu had never been more depressed.

He said, “What’s the point?”

Of course, the System didn’t answer him. Shen Qingqiu sent the interface within him two middle fingers.

Indeed, this System was stupid, what was its point?

So he could know how exactly how miserable these people were? So he could personally see the various tragic misfortunes the world had to offer?

Or so he could drive Luo Binghe insane?

Everyone said Luo Binghe had gone mad. Even he’d admitted, while smiling, that he’d gone mad.

The Xin Mo Luo Binghe finally suppressed after ten million words of struggling in the original work, had gained the upper hand here, and invaded Luo Binghe’s mind.

This wasn’t a result of one or two things, but a bit-by-bit accumulation, until finally it had completely erupted. Before, many signs had already appeared, but Shen Qingqiu had never noticed.

One should say, he’d never known that Luo Binghe was actually this insecure, to the point of having an inferiority complex.

First he’d believed Luo Binghe too evil, then he’d believed Luo Binghe too strong. Looking back, the signs of Xin Mo invading Luo Binghe’s mind, had appeared as early as Zhao Hua Temple.

Luo Binghe had just heard about his past, and received a massive shock. In his moment of greatest panic, he’d reached a hand out to Shen Qingqiu, pleading for Shen Qingqiu to leave with him.

But he hadn’t taken Luo Binghe’s hand, and instead made Luo Binghe leave by himself. At that time Luo Binghe’s psyche became incredibly unstable. What he needed wasn’t a safe retreat, but to be together with Shen Qingqiu. Even if he was trapped in Zhao Hua Temple and unable to retreat, even if he was besieged by the people present, both were better than him leaving alone!

For Luo Binghe, when in that state of mind, it was as good as being “abandoned.”

It was like a repeat of how Su Xiyan willingly took the poison that would have killed him.

Exactly as Luo Binghe himself had said, he wasn’t forcing him to choose between the two. Because Luo Binghe was completely certain he knew the answer, down to his core: that Shen Qingqiu would one day abandon him.

His entire mind flooding with terror and anxiety from speculating over something that hadn’t happened. How could he not go completely insane.

Yue Qingyuan’s steps became increasingly unsteady, to the point he almost couldn’t stand anymore.

Shen Qingqiu had never seen this Sect Leader look so weak. Yue Qingyuan had always been stolid and full of strength; even if he never spoke too much, was never aggressive, was gentle and affable, he was also extremely dependable and dignified.

Now, he was having difficulty even walking, and was talking more than normal; he likely really thought he couldn’t make it.

Shen Qingqiu was almost dragging him along by now, saying while walking, “Zhangmen-shixiong, hold on, you absolutely can’t pass out. Everything will be alright in a moment.”

Yue Qingyuan smiled bitterly and said, “All these years, you never mention the past, and only ever call me Zhangmen-shixiong. Are you determined to never call me Qi-ge again?”

The bones and veins in Shen Qingqiu’s sword-holding hand bulged. Yue Qingyuan wanted to hear Shen Jiu call him Qi-ge. But, he wasn’t Shen Jiu!

He schooled the original’s cold, hate-filled countenance, adamantly refusing, “I won’t call.”

He must not raise the flag! In dramas and novels, whenever a character achieves their final wish and finishes giving their last words, they immediately kick the bucket, satisfied. Shen Qingqiu coldly said, “I didn’t hear anything you just said. Hold on, keep going!”

Yue Qingyuan closed his eyes, sighing, and said, “Xiao-Jiu ah…”

Don’t call him that.

He didn’t dare consider, when Luo Binghe severed “Shen Qingqiu’s” legs in the original work, and sent them to Cang Qiong Mountains Sect in a brocade box, how Yue Qingyuan felt, knowing there was no coming back, righteously walking into Luo Binghe’s trap without a struggle, to be pierced by ten thousand arrows.

To think a lifetime’s single moment of loyalty, actually had to be repaid with so many things.

Yue Qingyuan couldn’t even tell “Shen Qingqiu” in time, who was full of resentment, who pursued a life of degradation, who helped Luo Binghe lead him into a trap, the reason he didn’t go rescue him that year.

Why didn’t he say it earlier.

He and Luo Binghe, were the same. Why didn’t he speak up earlier.

If he hadn’t been so matter-of-fact, so full of conjecture, Luo Binghe may never have darkened, and remained the cute and bashful disciple he’d been at Qing Jing Peak.

Even if they backed up ten thousand steps, to when he’d been forced to push Luo Binghe into the Endless Abyss, he could have used a completely different method to do it. He could have even not put any thought into it at all. Only now, did Shen Qingqiu understand, that if he’d wanted Luo Binghe to go down, all he’d needed to do was say so, and Luo Binghe would have listened and gone down.

Shen Qingqiu had never thought of this possibility. He didn’t believe that a person could be so foolish, that Luo Binghe could be so obedient.

But in truth, he really was that foolish, and that obedient.

Twisting and turning, taking all sort of detours, taking such a long way around, utterly lost, not knowing how to proceed, full of regret and sorrows, he could only sigh, “if only I had known.”

But in this world, there was never an “if only I had known.”

Turning past this cavern, he suddenly saw two figures, covered in dirt.

Ajs soon as he saw the two round, shiny, and bald heads, Shen Qingqiu blurted, “Wu Chen-dashi. Wu Wang-dashi.”

The short monk who was carrying someone much taller was Wu Chen-dashi; one of his wooden prosthetic legs was missing. Walking alone with a single leg was already difficult, on top of that he was unable to join his palms, yet he was still unwilling to be impolite, and chose to recite some extra sutras: “Amitabha Buddha, Shen-fengzhu, we finally found you. What happened to Yue-zhangmen?”

Ever since closing his eyes, Yue Qingyuan had been drowsily leaning on Shen Qingqiu. Shen Qingqiu said, “Zhangmen-shixiong was hit on the head with a rock. What about Wu Wang-dashi?”

Wu Chen said, “Injured by that Tianlang-jun’s demonic qi, and unconscious for now. With the cavern’s collapse, those demons completely disappeared.”

Shen Qingqiu pulled out Xiu Ya, handing it over: “Dashi, can I ask you to take my shixiong and Wu Wang-dashi, the sword, and leave Maigu Mountain?

Wu Chen said, “What about Shen-fengzhu?”

Shen Qingqiu concisely said, “My disciple, I will deal with.”

Wu Chen said respectfully, “If Shen-fengzhu is willing to calmly face him, there could be nothing better.”

Shen Qingqiu said, “I’m ashamed. But before something irreparable happens, I wish to resolve these affairs. I leave Zhangmen-shixiong to Wu Chen-dashi; after you go down, please give him to Qian Cao Peak’s Mu-shidi. I am deeply grateful.”

Wu Chen put down Wu Wang, bowed and received Xiu Ya with both hands, then suddenly said, “Inner demons arise as a result of obsession.”

Shen Qingqiu froze: “Is Dashi trying to say, to eliminate his inner demons, we must remove his obsession?”

Yet Wu Chen shook his head, saying, “If it were removable, it wouldn’t be obsession.”

“I thought so too.” Shen Qingqiu bowed back, then turned around.

Who made him the object of Luo Binghe’s obsession.
